For a few years they were able to enjoy their retirement. Their family made sure they were well supplied with fuel, food & all necessities of life. They had radio, television & phone. They played cards, read etc. When he could, the author got Jig -saw puzzles for Lucy, took her to town & on visits to relatives. For Homer a few cigars & Muscatel wine. By 1950 Homer started to fail. He had a leg removed due to circulation problems. He survived the operation & was able to get around on crutches for awhile but was soon confined to a wheelchair. Lucy, as steady as ever, was able to take care of both the home & Homer. After eating lunch & watching television with 13 year old granddaughter Connie Blakesley, Homer suffered a heart attack & died on Dec. 16 1953. He would have been 74 on Dec. 26.

Lucy continued to live in the home until probably 1956. She then moved into a mobile home located on son John’s property. His home was located just across the road from her home. This properly was originally the location of the Reeds Corners Baptist Church. Charles bought the building in 1049 & took it down. [see LINK CHARLES & ALICE ]. John bought the land in 1954 & built a house, now 3892 Co. Rd. 18. Lucy’s house was rented out, but burned down in late 1950s. Most of her possessions were still there & were lost. In the early 1960s she moved in with Robert & his wife Pauline who lived at now 3916 Rt. 247 in Reeds Corners. She was still able to care for herself, but later moved to the Ontario County Home in Hopewell. She died there July 29 1966. at age 88 years, 3 months & days old.. Both Homer & Lucy are buried in Gorham Cemetery.
