John was a history buff, especially American & Civil War history. He got the author started many years ago. He also was a great joker. For many years there was a green bottle which contained a scorched bone. He said it was Emily Jane’s finger bone. She was the first wife of Orville Lane who was the half brother of the author’s mother, Alice Blakesley /Bardeen. She was killed in a house fire in 1941/42. John said he found it during the clean up & kept it as a memento. The author thinks it was a chicken bone. John was a good old boy & one of the authors favorite uncles.

Robert worked on the family farm until Homer & Lucy retired in 1946. He lived with them at their Reeds Corners home until he married Pauline in 1950. Bob & Pauline then lived in a small mobile home that was set up in Homer & Lucy’s back yard. They bought their home at what is now 3916 State rt. 247 in Reeds Corners NY in 1956. They lived there the rest of their lives. The home is now owned by their son Gary & wife Jane.
Robert worked for the New York Department of Transportation [DOT] Highway Department for many years. One of his jobs was plowing snow at all hours of day & night. One story he liked to tell was about coming home in the wee hours. Climbing in bed, he patted Pauline & said “High honey. where’s Bob”? She replied “The damn fool is out plowing snow”. Pauline took vigorous exception to that story!
Pauline worked for many years in the cafeteria at the Gorham NY school.
“Uncle” Bob & “Auntie” Paul knew how to have fun. They loved to play cards [Bob would cheat when he could get away with it], square dances, snow mobile & go camping. This author & family enjoyed many, many good times with them. They were more like brother & sister & good friends to us. We miss them with sad hearts.
